Michael holds a courtesy appointment of Research Scholar/Scientist at IHMC and is Professor of Decision and Information Science in the Goizueta Business School at Emory University and holds an adjunct appointment in the Department of Psychology. He holds Ph.D. in Information Systems, with minors in Computer Science and Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Michael worked as a research scientist at Honeywell’s Systems Research and Development Center, and has taught at Dartmouth College, Carnegie Mellon University and was department chair at the Johns Hopkins University where also held an adjunct appointment in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Michael has published in such journals as Organizational Science, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, the ORSA Journal on Computing, and the Harvard Business Review. He has currently co-edited two books: Computational Organization Theory (Erlbaum, 1994) and Simulating Organizations: Computational Models of Institutions and Groups (MIT Press, 1998). His current book projects include Ten Models: Excursions and Explorations in Computational Social Science (with Kathleen Carley of Carnegie Mellon) and Executives on Stage: A Dramatic Model for Improving Communication (with Geoff Hitch of Carnegie Mellon).
Michael’s primary research areas are computational models of individual and group behaviors (such as social algorithms), cognitive models of negotiation, and the analysis and representation of expert knowledge. He has received numerous research grants and has worked on such systems as MacMerle (artificial intelligence scheduling), Rheumer (medical expert advisor), Steambal (an engineering tutorial and simulation), Plural-Soar (distributed artificial intelligence), and TrustMe (social science simulation). His current projects include CM2 (market simulation based on A Behavioral Theory of the Firm), TrustUs (evolutionary social science simulation), the ACT Emotion Engine and Affect (simulated emotional agents), Tides (a social simulation of group emergence), xChng (a simulation of knowledge exchange), Xplore (an expansion of James March’s Exploration-Exploitation model), and Norm (a norm and group evolution model).
Michael has also served as a musician, a stage manager and member of the Board of Directors for a theatre company, taught an Acting workshop for MBAs and Executives, and is a certified PADI scuba diving instructor.
